Trump Demands Jailing of Chicago Leader and State Executive as National Guard Arrive in City

Ex-President Donald Trump on Wednesday called for the detainment of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, alleging them of failing to protect federal immigration officers.

"Chicago's Mayor belongs behind bars for endangering Immigration agents!" Trump wrote on social media Wednesday morning. "Governor Pritzker too!"

Both officials are members of the Democratic faction.

These remarks coincide with the arrival of National Guard troops in the Windy City area following directives from the federal administration, notwithstanding strong objections from Illinois authorities including the governor and mayor.

"This marks not the first instance where Trump has sought to have an African American leader unjustly detained," Mayor Johnson stated on that day. "I'm not going put."

The governor responded via online channels, declaring: "I refuse to back down. Trump is now calling for imprisonment of democratically chosen representatives resisting his authority. What's next on the path to full-blown authoritarianism?"

By Wednesday morning, National Guard units from the Lone Star State had reached the Elwood training facility, an army base roughly 80 kilometers from Chicago, as the administration advances with its aggressive crime strategy and mass deportation efforts.

The president has called Chicago a "dangerous hellhole", even though official statistics indicate significant drops in most criminal activities, such as murders.

On Wednesday, 200 Texas National Guard troops were expected to deploy to the Chicago area, with an additional three hundred state military personnel preparing to mobilize, per reports. Authorities reportedly stated the troops would not perform law enforcement duties but would secure ICE officers and their facilities.

Military personnel wearing uniforms with Texas national guard patches were spotted at the US army reserve center in Elwood. Trucks marked "Emergency Disaster Services" dropped off sanitation facilities and other supplies. Mobile units were set up in rows. Additional fencing was installed around the compound.

Aviation authorities ordered flight restrictions over the army reserve center for safety concerns until 6 December.

Federal authorities has escalated immigration enforcement in the city in the past month, sparking protests, particularly near an processing facility in Broadview.

On Monday, state and city initiated legal action against the federal government, seeking to block the military dispatch, urging a federal judge to stop what they describe as "Trump's long-declared 'Battle'" on the city and state, calling it "unlawful and risky".

A court hearing on their lawsuit is scheduled for Thursday.

Mayor Johnson also issued an directive on that day banning federal immigration agents and others from using municipal facilities as staging areas for enforcement actions.

The governor has charged the president of using military forces as "political props" and "pawns".

At a news conference on Tuesday, he said that Trump is attempting to "rationalize and normalize the deployment of armed soldiers under his direct command."

The historic Posse Comitatus Act limits the military's role in civilian law enforcement. Yet, Trump has stated he would be willing to activate the emergency powers, which allows a commander-in-chief to dispatch regular army in states that are unable to suppress an uprising or are resisting national authority.

After beginning his new administration, Trump has sent or mentioned sending military units to at least 10 cities, such as Baltimore; Washington DC; New Orleans and West Coast locations like Bay Area and Southern California municipalities, arguing that the armed forces is necessary to fight violence and protect ICE officers.

Statistics indicates that serious offenses across the US has declined in the past few years. In Chicago, for instance, homicides were reduced 31% to 278 through late summer, per police data.

A recent poll published on Wednesday found that the majority of US citizens oppose the deployment of troops without an foreign danger.
